Lebanon unfolds like an open-air museum, with ancient stones that tell stories from centuries past. In Baalbek, the Temple of Bacchus stands among the most impressive Roman ruins outside Italy, its columns framed by Beqaa Valley light. In Byblos, one of the oldest cities in the world, ruins sit beside a bustling harbor and modern cafés, blending past and present in a single stroll.
Seaside is a coastal city on Oregon’s northern Pacific shore, set between the ocean, the Necanicum River, and the wooded foothills of the Coast Range. Its broad sandy beach and compact oceanfront district have made it one of the state’s best-known coastal communities. The Promenade, a paved oceanfront walkway, follows the beach through the center of town and provides access to shops, restaurants, and public spaces.
Langtang National Park lies just north of Kathmandu, yet it feels far removed from the city’s pace. As Nepal’s first Himalayan national park, it stretches from lush river valleys to high alpine ridges close to the Tibetan border. Snow-covered peaks such as Langtang Lirung rise above forests of oak, maple, and rhododendron, creating dramatic shifts in scenery over short distances.
Wales is a country where centuries-old castles rise above green valleys and coastlines are marked by rugged cliffs and quiet coves. Its capital, Cardiff, combines modern architecture with historical landmarks like Cardiff Castle, which has Roman origins and a Victorian Gothic interior. Just outside the city, St Fagans National Museum of History offers a walk-through experience of Welsh life over the past 500 years, with original buildings relocated from across the country.

Ascension island, British dependency of St. Helena (which also includes St. Helena and the Tristan da Cunha group), in the South Atlantic Ocean, about midway between Africa and South America and 700 miles northwest of St. Helena. The small, volcanic island was sighted by the Portuguese in 1501, but it was uninhabited until the exile of Napoleon to St. Helena in 1815, when the British established a garrison here to guard against his escape. In 1922 the island was annexed to St. Helena. It was a refueling base for U.S. aircraft in World War II. The United States built a station here in 1957 as a post for observing guided missiles. Huge numbers of sea turtles and sooty terns breed on the island. Georgetown is the main settlement.
