McMurdo is distinctive not only for its scientific role but also for the unusual scale of daily life in Antarctica. The station has a power plant, medical facilities, dining services, workshops, communications systems, and specialized vehicles used to support research in extreme conditions. Nearby Scott Base, operated by New Zealand, provides another important Antarctic research presence on Ross Island. McMurdo also supports flights and overland journeys to remote parts of the continent.
Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, sits along the Danube River at the crossroads of Central Europe. It's the only capital in the world bordering Austria and Hungary, which makes it an easy stop on many European itineraries. Yet Bratislava is more than a waypoint; it offers a compact city center filled with centuries of history. The Old Town’s cobbled lanes lead past Gothic cathedrals, Baroque palaces, and buildings once used by Habsburg royalty.
Skeleton Coast National Park stretches for about 500 kilometres along Namibia’s northwestern Atlantic coast, from the Ugab River toward the Kunene River. The park covers roughly 16,390 square kilometres of beaches, dunes, gravel plains, ephemeral riverbeds, canyons, and rugged mountain landscapes. Cold Atlantic water from the Benguela Current helps produce frequent coastal fog, which can extend inland across the desert.
