Pondicherry is a coastal town in southern India that still carries traces of its French colonial past. This bend is one of the most severe anywhere on the Rhein, so much so that the town frontage faces due north while the vineyards, one the same band face due south. The bend is also known as the "bendiest bend on the Rhein."

The town is especially known for the Bayeux Tapestry, an extraordinary embroidered work that depicts the Norman Conquest of England and is displayed at the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux.
