Kerak is a fortress town 75 miles (120km) from Amman, and contains one of the two major Crusader castles in the Kingdom. The castle, built to protect the approach to Jerusalem, stands on a craggy plateau 4,300ft above sea level. It was built in the early part of the 12th century and held for 50 years by the Crusaders until they were defeated by Salah al Din (Saladin) in 1189.
Dramatic and otherworldly, Deadvlei in Namibia is one of the most surreal landscapes on the planet. Located within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Deadvlei is a white clay pan that was once an oasis filled with acacia trees. Over 900 years ago, a shift in climate and the encroachment of the towering red sand dunes cut off the river that fed the pan, leaving behind a hauntingly beautiful scene of dead trees that have been perfectly preserved in the arid environment.

In the newer area you will find excellent hotels, chic shops, and good restaurants. Near the old downtown commercial center, behind the Catedral Metropolitana, and a block off Central Park, the Central Market where everything made or produced in the country is sold.
