Qingdao, also Tsingtao or Ch'ing-tao, Shandong Province, eastern China. It is a major naval base, an industrial center, and a port on the Yellow Sea at the entrance to sheltered Jiaozhou Bay. The port, which rarely freezes over, serves the industrialized northern China Plain and was expanded in 1976 to include an oil terminal for large tankers on Huang Island. The leading manufactures of the city include textiles, railroad equipment, rubber goods, fertilizer, and chemicals.

Roses is a coastal town in Catalonia’s Alt Empordà, positioned at the eastern edge of the Iberian Peninsula where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean. Its broad bay opens toward the Cap de Creus peninsula, giving the town a landscape of beaches, rocky headlands, and low coastal hills. Roses has a strong maritime identity, with a fishing port operating alongside a marina and a long seafront promenade.

Selfoss is the largest town in South Iceland and an important service center for the surrounding agricultural communities. It stands on the Ölfusá River, whose broad waters are fed by the glacial rivers of Iceland’s southern highlands.
