Located among the calcareous plateaus covered with Mideterranean scrub and alluvial deposites from the coastal plains, Nîmes appears as a city with various faces. First and foremost, the city is known as the 'French Roma', because of its famous history and its well conserved antique monuments. Nîmes is also, for many 'aficionados', the 'French Madrid'.
Arequipa, known as the "White City," is built from sillar, a pale volcanic stone that glows in the sunlight. This architectural detail gives the historic center its striking appearance and has earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Towering above the city is the perfectly symmetrical Misti Volcano, which, along with two neighboring peaks, forms a dramatic backdrop.
The continent lying mainly within the Antarctic Cirle with the South Pole approximately at its center. The Antarctic Treaty of 1959, signed by 12 countries prohibits military activities and promotes the exchange of scientific information.
McMurdo is distinctive not only for its scientific role but also for the unusual scale of daily life in Antarctica. The station has a power plant, medical facilities, dining services, workshops, communications systems, and specialized vehicles used to support research in extreme conditions. Nearby Scott Base, operated by New Zealand, provides another important Antarctic research presence on Ross Island. McMurdo also supports flights and overland journeys to remote parts of the continent.

This is a wild and beautiful area unlike anywhere else in the world. Torres del Paine lies between the central spine of the Andes, nearly buried under a massive ice cap and the steppes of Southern Patagonia. The mountains that comprise Paine Massif are not high for the Andes, but they are precipitous. What makes individual mountains so dramatic is that from most places in the park entire peaks can be seen-from base to summit-and they appear to leap into the clouds from the floor of the valley. With its 450,000 acres, Torres del Paine truly is a world-class park because of its completeness, having every feature one could hope for in a temperate zone park. It has, like all truly great parks, that indefinable element in its character to which visitors respond.
