Dampier Peninsula is situated along the north east coast of western Australia within the famous Kimberley. Founded in the 7th century BC, the city of Durres has been conquered by many invading armies. Although most of these left a few traces in the old town of Durres, the main attraction is the excellent beach near the town. Perhaps the most famous of Albanian beaches, it offers shallow waters close to the shore, which makes it very suitable for families and children. Its position in Durres Bay also protects it from winds. Many Albanians from Tirana spend their summer vacations on the beaches of Durrës.
Some important buildings in Durres include the main library, the cultural center with the Aleksander Moisiu theater, the Estrada Theater, the puppet theater, and the philharmonic orchestra. There are also several museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of History.
