Wick’s location at the mouth of the River Wick provides a dramatic coastal setting, with cliffs, sandy beaches, and the North Sea stretching into the horizon.

Qingdao, also Tsingtao or Ch'ing-tao, Shandong Province, eastern China. It is a major naval base, an industrial center, and a port on the Yellow Sea at the entrance to sheltered Jiaozhou Bay. The port, which rarely freezes over, serves the industrialized northern China Plain and was expanded in 1976 to include an oil terminal for large tankers on Huang Island. The leading manufactures of the city include textiles, railroad equipment, rubber goods, fertilizer, and chemicals.

Punta Espinosa is located on Fernandina Island in Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago, an island shaped by recent volcanic activity and isolated landscapes. The site is known for its dark lava fields, sparse vegetation, and large populations of marine iguanas resting along the shoreline.

Walvis Bay, set along Namibia’s Atlantic coast, is a vibrant port town where desert and ocean converge in striking contrast. Once under German and later South African administration, the bay has long been valued for its deep natural harbor, which remains central to Namibia’s fishing and shipping industries today.

McMurdo is distinctive not only for its scientific role but also for the unusual scale of daily life in Antarctica. The station has a power plant, medical facilities, dining services, workshops, communications systems, and specialized vehicles used to support research in extreme conditions. Nearby Scott Base, operated by New Zealand, provides another important Antarctic research presence on Ross Island. McMurdo also supports flights and overland journeys to remote parts of the continent.
