Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies about 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, where the Mojave Desert rises into sandstone cliffs, rugged mountains, and broad desert valleys. Nevada’s first National Conservation Area, it covers nearly 198,000 acres and provides a sharp contrast to the developed landscape of Las Vegas. The area is best known for its red and cream-colored rock formations, especially the Calico Hills and the Red Rock escarpment.

Waterberg Plateau National Park is a protected area in central Namibia, known for its long sandstone plateau rising above surrounding savanna and thornbush. The porous sandstone supports permanent springs at the base of the plateau, creating greener habitats than those found across much of the surrounding region.

Black Hills National Forest covers a mountainous island of forests in western South Dakota, surrounded by the open plains of the Great Plains. The landscape includes granite peaks, narrow canyons, ponderosa pine forests, lakes, streams, and rolling grasslands. The forest stretches across a large portion of the Black Hills and contains some of the highest elevations in the region.

Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument stretches across southern Utah as a vast landscape of layered cliffs, winding canyons, and open desert plateaus. The land shifts in color from pale cream to deep red, depending on the angle of the sun, revealing rock layers that look like pages stacked over time. Much of the area feels remote, with long dirt roads like Hole-in-the-Rock Road leading travelers deep into quiet terrain where rock formations rise suddenly from flat ground.
