Aquila Private Game Reserve is a wildlife reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape province, located near Touws River, approximately two hours by road from Cape Town. Set within the semi-arid landscapes of the Karoo, the reserve covers roughly 10,000 hectares of mountains, valleys, open plains and scrubland. It is known for guided safaris that provide opportunities to observe large African mammals without travelling to the country’s more distant national parks. Aquila offers day visits and overnight accommodation, with game drives taking place across its varied terrain. The reserve’s relatively dry climate and wide horizons distinguish it from the coastal landscapes around Cape Town.
The reserve takes its name from the Latin word for eagle, reflecting the birds of prey associated with the surrounding mountain environment. Aquila occupies land within the wider Karoo region, where livestock farming and rural settlements have long shaped human activity. Its conservation work focuses on protecting wildlife and restoring habitats affected by earlier land use. The reserve is also associated with anti-poaching initiatives and wildlife rehabilitation through its conservation programmes. Nearby Touws River reflects the agricultural and railway heritage of the interior Western Cape, while Afrikaans and English are widely spoken alongside other languages used throughout the province.
Aquila is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and African buffalo. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, hippos, ostriches and several antelope species. Guided game drives follow tracks through open plains and rocky hills, where the sparse vegetation often allows broad views across the landscape. The reserve lies within the Karoo’s distinctive semi-arid environment, characterized by hardy shrubs, seasonal grasses and plants adapted to limited rainfall. Mountain ridges and waterholes create varied habitats, while birdlife includes raptors and other species associated with open country. Aquila also maintains facilities for animal care and conservation activities.
