Nusamai Bridge, crossing the Kushiro River near the harbor, is one of the city’s most recognized landmarks and is especially known for sunset views. Nearby Lake Akan and Akan-Mashu National Park offer volcanic landscapes, forests, and clear crater lakes within reach of the city.
Food in Kushiro centers heavily on seafood from the Pacific coast. Local specialties include robatayaki, where fish and shellfish are grilled over open charcoal fires, and Kushiro ramen, typically prepared with a light soy-based broth and thin noodles. Washo Market is known for its katte-don, a customizable seafood rice bowl assembled by choosing ingredients from different vendors.
