Algiers
Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, occupying a series of hills along the western side of a broad Mediterranean bay. Its landscape combines a historic hillside core, modern districts, busy avenues, and a large waterfront. The white facades of the city rise above the sea, giving Algiers its familiar nickname, “Algiers the White.”
Carcass Island
Adjoining the idyllic farm of the McGill family are miles of beaches, tussock grass, and wildflower meadows, the nesting grounds of hundreds of Magellanic and gentoo penguins, upland and kelp geese, crested and flightless steamer ducks, tussock birds, and night herons. Gokyo
Gokyo is a small settlement high in Nepal’s Khumbu region, set beside a chain of turquoise glacial lakes beneath the Himalaya. Its significance is closely tied to trans-Himalayan trade routes and to Sherpa culture, which has adapted over generations to life at extreme altitude.
Isla Mujeres
North of Cancun, the island was first discovered by the Spanish in the 1500's. It has numerous Mayan ruins, many badly eroded. It is also a sanctuary for sea turtles.
