Santa Cruz is in stark contrast to La Paz. Climate is tropical and altitude is only 1,250 feet. It is on the eastern lowland side of the Andes mountain range and one of the gateways to Bolivia's jungle area. Trinidad is the other. Much of Bolivia's natural resources, including agricultural products, are found in this area. The Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, located on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor, Egypt, are two of the world’s most significant archaeological sites. For over 500 years during the New Kingdom (16th–11th centuries BCE), these valleys served as the burial grounds for pharaohs, queens, and high-ranking nobles.

Although not accessible by road, it is Peru's most important commerical center in the east. It is on the Amazon which is wide enough to allow freighters at their busy port. The 1880's saw the rubber boom and recently oil has been the boom.
